Sailing in the British Virgin Islands
With the British Virgin Islands as the backdrop, travelguru David Wickers explores the different options available for Sailing Holidays catering for complete novices through to experienced sailors. Whether you want to learn, charter your own boat, join a fully crewed yacht or even take part in international races, the BVI is the place to do it.
The British Virgin Islands truly are a sailing paradise. The cluster of some 60 or islands fringe a huge body of water that provides perfect conditions – steady winds, generally from the East, deep water, line of sight sailing and plenty of options for moorings and anchorages. Whatever your level of experience, the conditions are ideal.
For beginners, there are plenty of options for learning the ropes and more advanced sailors are spoilt for choice whether you are looking for bareboat charter or a skippered yacht. Joining a flotilla is also an attractive option – giving you independence but the reassurance of back up if needed from the lead crew.
If you prefer to let others do the hard graft, consider the luxury crewed yacht option. Combined with a few nights on land in one of the resorts this is a really appealing combination and a great way to be introduced to the delights of a holiday afloat.
