Travelguru David Wickers takes us on a first hand guided tour of the British Virgin Islands. Being a chain of some 60 different islands, a holiday here generally involves more complex travel arrangements than your average holiday. David puts it in to context and offers his advice on how to make the most of your stay.
Whether you want to swim, sail or simply sit by it with a good book, if you love the water, The British Virgin Islands are the place to be. Sailors will think they’ve died and gone to heaven whilst land lubbers are rewarded with stunning scenery, uncrowded beaches and some wonderful accommodation options.
Completely different in style to the neighbouring U.S. Virgin Islands, the BVI’s are laid back, uncommercialised and uncrowded. There are no chain hotels here, barefoot luxury is the very much the style. Tortola and Virgin Gorda are the two largest islands but with 60 or so in the group, it pays to island hop. Each has its own highlights – many are uninhabited, some home to only a small bar or hotel and each has its own appeal and character. To have your own boat is the dream ticket but you don’t have to charter a yacht to enjoy a multi island holiday – getting around is easy by water taxi or local ferry.
