Macau took me by surprise. Its well known for its casinos but, as I soon discovered, for international visitors, there is so much more to see and do. Its history is fascinating. Settled by the Portuguese in the 16th century, their influence remains evident; in the architecture, the people and, of course, in food and wines. The Portuguese were great explorers but this blend of Portuguese and Chinese influences is truly unique.

Beyond the cultural interest, although Macau is only small (29sq kms in total), there is more than enough to keep you occupied for 3 or 4 days. You will need at least a day in the historic centre and I'd suggest building in time to visit some for the many museums and attractions. For history buffs, the Macau Museum is fascinating and the brand new Science Centre designed by renowned architect I M Pei, is well worth a look.

The casinos can be fun but, even if gambling is not your cup of tea, along with them come fantastic entertainment complexes. There is no end of shopping malls, cool bars, restaurants, nightclubs and some truly spectacular shows. Spend time in Macau and you can have a really fun time enjoying both culture and entertainment.

The Place

Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China loacted at the mouth of the Pearl River on China's south coast. It is 40 miles west of Hong Kong. Covering an area of just 29 sq kms it is made up of a Peninsula and the two connecting islands of Taipa and Coloane. All are linked by three road bridges across the Pearl River Estuary. The main city area is on the peninsula. Coloane offers green countryside, quiet villages and sandy beaches. Coati, an area of reclaimed land between the two islands is home to some of Macau's newest and largest resort hotels.

Climate

Macau has a tropical climate, with high humidity and an average annual temperature of 20c. October to December is the most pleasant time of the year when the days should be sunny and warm and humidity low. January to March are cooler but mostly sunny. Humidity increases in April with rain common from may to September.

Entry Requirements

UK passport holders do not need visas for stays of up to six months.

Getting Around

Macau is tiny so it follows that getting around is easy - its also very cheap. Licensed taxis are easy to find and can be hailed on the streets. Pedicabs (pedal powered trishaws) can also be flagged down for short journeys. Buses run throughout the city from 6am to midnight and from the city to the islands from 06.45 to 23.00

Car hire is another option. Distances are short with the longest drive from the border with mainland China to the beaches in the south taking no more than 30 minutes.
